Founded in 1976 by Gary Gerber a pioneer in the industry, Sun Light & Power is celebrating its 40th continuous year of designing and building solar systems in California, a feat unmatched by any solar company in the state. Sun Light & Power’s team of engineers, project managers and installers serves a wide range of commercial, nonprofit, municipal and residential clients, with a strong emphasis on the affordable housing sector. Sun Light & Power is one of the first companies in the state to become a Certified Benefit Corporation as well as being the first solar company to be certified as an Alameda County Green Business.

Sun Light & Power is active in both the residential and commercial solar markets, having installed over 1000 residential projects and over 700 commercial projects. In the commercial market Sun Light & Power serves a broad range of commercial and nonprofit clients, encompassing new construction and retrofit projects for office and industrial sites, multifamily housing, food service businesses, schools, places of worship, nonprofit organizations, utilities, government buildings and more.

ODC shotwellAn example of their nonprofit commercial projects is the Oberlin Dance Collective. Sun Light & Power installed solar panels to power the two buildings that hold the ODC’s offices, school and theaters. Sun Light & Power and the ODC teamed up with CollectiveSun to help the ODC fund their project through a crowd-lending campaign. This solar installation will help the ODC save in excess of $300,000 over the lifetime of the system.

A_BCorp_logo_POSAs part of their mission to better the world, Sun Light & Power was one of the first 15 California Benefit Corporations (an alternative form of legal incorporation that enables for-profit entities to integrate social and environmental goals into their business operations.) In addition, they are a Benefit Corporation (B Corp.) Benefit Corporations are required to create a material positive impact on society and the environment. They are expected to meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and most importantly, accountability.
In April of 2015, Sun Light and Power was honored with the designation of Best of World Honoree from the nonprofit B Lab. The ‘B Corp Best for the World’ list honors businesses that earned an overall score in the top 10% of more than 1,200 Certified B Corporations from over 120 industries on the B Impact Assessment, a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of a company’s impact on its workers, community, and the environment. Honorees were recognized among micro, small, and mid-sized businesses around the globe.
